This is a very simple and refreshing salad, dating back to 1893 and consisting of only apples, celery, walnuts and mayonnaise. Raisins are optional.

Waldorf salad recipe

Ingredients

  • 3 green apples (Granny Smith’s)
  • 2 sticks of celery
  • 2 oz (55 g) of walnuts
  • 2 tbsp of mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp of lemon juice
  • Salt and pepper

Method

  1. Wash and core the apples but do not peel them. Cut into small pieces and place into a mixing bowl.
  2. Add the lemon juice and toss the apples in it. This is to prevent discolouration.
  3. Cut the celery into slices and add to the apples.
  4. Roughly chop or crush the walnuts and add to the salad.
  5. Season with salt and pepper and stir in the mayonnaise. Mix well to coat all ingredients.
  6. Serve or refrigerate until needed.
